What Teachers & Librarians are saying...
"Mr. McDonald was very strong in his ability to communicate with the students, very encouraging to the reluctant artists and very informative to students to follow your dreams. I will be following this with comic strips depicting events in history covered in our Social Studies curriculum." Mrs. Rose, 4th grade/Boulder Bluff Elementary, SC
“It was a BLAST! The kids were fascinated when he talked about how he got into cartooning, the process of developing your own characters and stories and the hands-on activities of getting the kids to draw their own characters in a comic format.” Bill Corder, Children's Librarian, IMAGINON, Charlotte, NC
“It was such a pleasure to have you with us at camp. I was delighted with the work you did with our students. We displayed your book and the students’ work, and it was very well received. We had well over a thousand in attendance at the finale.” Merrie Fisher, Coordinator of Gifted Programs, Berkeley County school District, SC
School Program details:
Using PowerPoint and a highly interactive step-by-step drawing demonstration, Dave guides students through the process of creating characters by using simple shapes. Fun exercises show students that WRITING comics can be just as much fun as drawing them! This 45-minute presentation is suitable for grades 3 through 6. I also offer workshops that can last a few hours, and multi-day residencies (4th - 12th) where students develop their own characters, write & draw their own comics.

Staff Development
"Bringing Comics, Cartooning & Puppetry to the Classroom" is an on-site Teacher Workshop created initially through a grant from the NC Arts Council and presented by the Gaston County Museum of Art & History. Participants acquire the skills necessary to create characters and comics, and engage in an activity that incorporates the use of primary sources and comics! Lesson plans are created and shared in this unique activity based workshop.
What Teachers said about this workshop...
“Great instructor who broke things down into understandable segments – explained concepts well. Nice blend of hands-on, primary sources & comics instruction. I will feel very comfortable teaching comics to my students.”
“I loved the idea of
using primary sources and art to bring history to life. Sharing ideas and feeding off the ideas
of others was great!”
“Very interesting and captivating workshop. I like Dave’s style of presentation; easy to understand and he addressed the elementary level concepts that we teach. I think that cartooning and puppetry are great ways for students to express themselves when they would not in any other way.”
