Salt Lake City Workshop!

Teachers making comics.  For three days.  Recently, I had the pleasure of co-presenting an intensive professional development workshop with Jimmy Gownley, NY Times best-selling author of Amelia Rules!, where the art of comics unfolded.  Westminster College was the venue for this visual arts workshop, where about 20 educators from the Salt Lake City area and beyond- gathered in the Tanner Atrium to experience the development and the making of comics. The takeaway was being able to successfully lead their own classroom (K-12) comics activity that could integrate curriculum standards.  Comics are highly visual and have a knack for grabbing a student’s attention;...

SC Book Festival!

This past weekend in Columbia SC, I attended my first ever SC Book Festival as a featured author, and it was such a great experience.  The big draw was Pat Conroy, but there was plenty of top-notch talent in attendance.  I was part of a panel called, Kidlit 101: Grabbing readers with Graphic Novels; alongside writer and renaissance man Alex Simmons (Archie Comics, Kids Comic Con, Disney Books) and Jeremy Whitley (writer/creator-Princeless, writer for NFL RushZone & My Little Pony).  the panel was moderated by the charming Qiana Whitted, literary professor at USC.  Topics discussed ranged from diversity in...

“Houston, we have a Hamster!”

I am really excited my friends!  In a few days I’ll be “lifting off” for Houston’s Space Center, where I will take part in the Space Exploration Educators Conference as a session presenter.  I will be leading a workshop for classroom teachers entitled, “Mission Cartoonist: Making Cross-Curricular Comics”, which will prepare them for instructing students on how to develop their own characters and create a comic that features the integration of state standards in science.  Can’t wait!  My session filled up within a few days of registration- so I am excited about working with an enthusiastic group.  I’ll have...

Sun shines on Savannah Children’s Book Festival!

Friday was looking “iffy”, as rain threatened to move the  Savannah Children’s Book Festival inside the civic center on Saturday- which wouldn’t have been terrible.  But at the author’s dinner Friday night, Christian, with the Live Oak Public Library,  announced that the sun would shine on the 10th annual celebration of kids and reading.  Christian was right, Saturday was picture perfect: sunny and 75- bringing an estimated 30,000-plus young fans of reading out to picturesque  Forsyth Park to meet the creators of the books they love.  The headliner was Marc Brown, creator of the popular “Arthur” series of books,...
