Kids make comics Residency program

Grades 3-5: Students are introduced to cartoon art and comics/graphic novels and artist’s career path to cartooning using PowerPoint.  Students examine the graphic and text tools used by cartoonists to tell stories in comic format, and under the guidance of “Mr. Dave”, they design and develop their own original characters and then complete a full-page black & white comics project for display. (Rubric/assessment provided). Opportunity for cross-curricular comics project.

Assembly program

Grades 2-5: “Mr. Dave” leads your students on a comics creation adventure! Using PowerPoint and a highly interactive drawing demonstration, students discover how to use simple shapes to create their very own characters as they follow along step by step with the artist. Students realize that WRITING can be just as much fun as DRAWING as they take part in an exciting STORY exercise that begins with a simple shape!

What they’re saying:

"I was impressed by the way Mr. McDonald broke the cartooning process down step by step for my students.  His kind and encouraging delivery of information allowed the kids to be successful and they loved it!  Many of them are still showing me cartoons that they have created on their own and the younger students are asking if they will get a chance to be with Mr. McDonald".

Connie Boleman, Art Teacher, Saluda River Academy for the Arts

“Our museum visitors loved learning to draw some of Dave’s characters but were especially excited by getting to create and draw their own characters. The interactive nature of Dave’s presentation made it fun for all ages. It was a wonderful family event for a busy weekend.”

Jessica Ruskin, Education Director, Charles M. Schulz Museum

VIRTUAL PROGRAMS

I am now offering several school programs virtually in an effort to provide your students with the opportunity to experience arts programming while engaged in online learning. It certainly doesn’t replace a live, in-person arts experience, but it’s the next best thing!

KIDS MAKE COMICS ASSEMBLY PROGRAM (2nd-5th): This 45-minute presentation will be streamed live and offers students the opportunity to interact with Mr. Dave and ask questions! Using screen share, the program begins with an introduction to cartooning, comics and graphic novels, including a look at the unique “language” used to tell stories in graphic format. Students then use pencil and paper to draw along step by step to create original characters that begin with simple shapes. Mr. Dave’s popular “30-second challenge” exercise shows students how quickly a new character can come to life PLUS how easily a story can take shape- students are always amazed at how fun the writing process can be!

RESIDENCY PROGRAM “KIDS MAKE COMICS” (4th & 5th): This is the program described above, offered through live streaming. Typically scheduled as a 4 day program (45-50 minutes each day), students will be guided through the process of making their own original comic project. TSW use a planning sheet to develop their own set of original characters and then proceed to make a full-page comic. Depending on availability of supplies, students will be using pencil, paper, erasers and possibly ink markers and colored pencils to complete their projects, which can be graded using a provided rubric, or displayed.
